Öster-Mörtarö nature reserve

The Öster-Mörtarö area is part of the small-scale and ancient agricultural landscape that is still alive in large parts of Gräsö. Here you will find grazed coastal meadows and plenty of pollarded trees. Most of the area consists of forest pasture. The forest pasture areas are varied with rocky grasslands, Scots pines, boggy alder groves, open former meadowlands and shoreline facing the sea. Here grows quite a lot of orchids, especially abundant Adam and Eve, coralroot, lady's seal and lesser twayblade. The open grazing lands include, among other things, a very species-rich old broadleaf meadow, which is located on the northern side of Mörtaröfjärden. The vegetation consists of fresh riverside meadows with many pollarded ash trees and also older pollarded birches. Cultural heritage values are found in the reserve in the form of a smithy remains (RAÄ number Gräsö 665), a harbour installation (RAÄ number Gräsö 475) and settlement remains (RAÄ number Gräsö 658).
