About Åkers Canal

Åkers Canal is located in Österåkers Municipality, north of Stockholm, and stretches just over four kilometres between Garnsviken and Trälhavet. The canal is classified as a national interest for cultural heritage preservation and is described as Stockholm County's only canal that has preserved its historic character.

History

The canal's roots stretch back to prehistoric times. The waterway is part of Långhundraleden – a shipping route that since the Bronze Age and Viking period connected the Baltic Sea with ancient Uppsala. Along the route, goods, people and culture were transported, and Iron Age burial mounds along the canal stretch bear witness to the area's long history of settlement.

The modern canal was dug out in the early 1820s. Because the local population showed little interest in the work, the Crown enlisted 150 conscripted soldiers from the Västmanland and Hälsingland regiments. It took three gruelling years to complete the excavation by hand. Traffic opened in 1825. The current lock was built in the 1880s and received its steel lock gates in 1912.

Steamboat traffic flourished from the 1860s. The vessels Åkers Kanal and Nya Åkers Kanal operated on the Stockholm–Brottby route until 1927. When the railway reached Åkersberga in 1911 and a new road bridge opened in 1939, commercial shipping traffic gradually declined.

• The Lock: Well-preserved 1880s lock with steel gates from 1912 – open for boat traffic during summer.
• Bridge Keeper's Cottage: Historic bridge keeper's residence from the mid-1800s, located by the canal.
• Iron Age Burial Mounds: Ancient remains along the canal stretch that testify to prehistoric settlement.
• Hälsans Path: Walking loop along the canal, accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

Things to do at Åkers Canal

The canal is popular for kayaking and canoeing during the summer months. The walking trail along the water offers a peaceful nature experience with views over the historic canal landscape. Artistic installations along the promenade and information signs with audio guides make a visit rewarding. At the end of August, the annual Canal Day is arranged with festivities and the classic Tupp-loppet race. The nearest public transport station is Åkersberga.
