Åker's Canal

A Historic Waterway

Åkers Canal — officially called Åkersströmmen — was inaugurated in 1825 after being canalized in the early 1800s. The canal connects Garnsviken in the north with Tunaviken and Trälhavet in the south, and runs through central Åkersberga in Österåkers Municipality. The total distance is 10.7 kilometers, of which the engineered section is 3.7 kilometers.

The Lock — the Canal's Heart

Along the canal there is a lock measuring 30 meters long and 7.4 meters wide. Locking is open May 15–October 15 and costs 50 kronor per passage. Booking is required at least one hour in advance. The minimum depth in the canal is 2.1 meters, and the clearance under bridges is 2–3 meters.

A Family-Friendly Canoe Route

Roslagen.se describes Åkers Canal as a «calm and sheltered trip suitable for the whole family». The sheltered location makes the route suitable for beginners and families with children. From the canal you can paddle on up toward Garnsviken — a full day trip of approximately six hours of paddling in a calm natural landscape.

Combine with Swimming and Nature

Around Österåkersfjärden there is an opportunity to combine paddling with a swim at Österåker Havsbad — a round trip of approximately two hours. The canal and its surroundings offer a contrast to the more open archipelago experience and are accessible for much of the season.
