Österbybruk is one of Uppland's Walloon ironworks and holds what is considered the only preserved Walloon forge in the world. Around the manor house, the mill pond and the smiths' cottages there is now a cultural centre with museums, exhibitions and a display garden.
About Österbybruk
The world's only completely preserved Walloon smithy
Österbybruk is one of the Uppland Walloon ironworks, and what sets it apart from the others is that the smithy still stands — not as a ruin or reconstruction, but intact. It is considered the only preserved Walloon smithy in the world. There are also two blast furnaces here in very good condition.
The foundation for everything lay a few kilometers away: Dannemora mine, whose ore produced iron that was sought after far beyond Sweden. Around the mine and smithy, an industrial community was built that operated for over 500 years.
From Gustav Vasa to De Geer
In the 15th century, Österby was a manor under Örbyhus, which was held by the Vasa family. Gustav Vasa, with the help particularly of German experts, had an ironworks established specializing in military equipment.
In the 17th century, the works came into the possession of Louis De Geer, together with Lövsta and Gimo — it was with De Geer that the Walloon smiths came to Uppland, and with them the metalworking technique that gave the works their name. Later Österby was owned by East India Company's Claes Grill and thereafter for generations by the Tamm family.
Production ceased in the 1980s. The stamp with two rings, which marked quality iron from Österby for more than 250 years, is still used by a foundry in the area.
What to see in the works area
- The Walloon smithy — the heart of the visit, and the reason the works is known internationally.
- Österbybruk manor house — with park and pond. There is also an inn here.
- The orangery garden — display garden by the manor house, with an orangery from the late 18th century.
- The steam hammer — events and fair hall in the old works area, with art exhibitions and music.
- The agricultural and fire museum — tractors, a steam locomotive and a fire engine from the interwar period.
- Dannemora mineral museum — minerals, rocks and fossils from the mining district.
- Films church — located north of the settlement. The old church was built in the 15th century, the new church was added in 1767.
Summer gatherings
Österbybruk is one of the nyckelharpa's towns. Every June a nyckelharpa gathering is held with fiddlers' competitions in the manor house park — nowadays merged with the Gillestämman, in memory of the works' renowned fiddler Hasse Gille. In August the Eldfesten is held, and during the summer half-year there are auctions in the manor house park almost every weekend.
How to get here
Österbybruk is located in the western part of Östhammars municipality, with county roads 290 and 292 as main access routes. Passenger trains stopped running around 1960; the railway remains for freight traffic to the port in Hargshamn.

Dannemora Hembygdsförening
Hembygdsgården , vår verksamhet består dels av att vårda och ta hand om ett tiotal äldre byggnader samt trädgården runt omkring. Vi anordnar även olika arrangemang under året. Saltboden på Herrgårdsområdet byggdes i början på 1800-talet och var en plats för förvaring av salt. I Lantbruksmuseet finns ett flertal gamla lantbruksmaskiner och brandredskap. Gruvmuseet , bildades 2017 och finns i gamla stallbyggnaden vid Dannemora gruva.
