Östhammar Church

In 1675 the church was inaugurated after a long construction period. During a later rebuilding in 1761 the church was lengthened towards the east, and ten years later new extensive building works began. It is believed that the church was then widened towards the west. Around 1740 the pulpit was completed, created by Olof Gerdman. The church's tower was finished in 1845. The lantern became octagonal and the tower body more solid than the drawings prescribed. The church's interior got its present appearance in 1925, with the main aim of restoring as far as possible the late-1700s character that the church room had previously had. In 1960 the pulpit regained its original colours, after having been repainted in the 1800s. An extensive interior renovation was also carried out here in 1989. The altar table is modern, but the inset wooden relief depicting the institution of the Eucharist is assumed to have adorned the church's first altar from the latter half of the 1600s. The altarpiece is from the same time and the oil painting has as its motif the crucifixion of Jesus.
