Penningby Castle, Norrtälje

The present stone house began to be erected sometime after 1466, when an older building was destroyed in connection with the late medieval civil strife. By the middle of the 1500s at the latest, the quadrangle had been complemented with the two diagonally placed defensive towers. In 1673 rebuilding from a defensive castle into a palace began, which was completed in the early 1730s. The two cellar floors, however, preserve the original medieval character and contain, among other things, a huge well that is still fully functioning. The park in the English style was laid out in 1805. The owning family's ambition is to safeguard and preserve the castle and its immediate surroundings.
