Resarö Chapel

Resarö Chapel is a small wooden chapel on the island of Resarö in Vaxholm Municipality, which belongs to Vaxholm Parish. The red-painted chapel has a completely unique history — it was originally a prefabricated traveling church built for the World Church Assembly in Uppsala, before it was purchased and consecrated on Resarö in 1968.

Architect Rolf Bergh created the chapel in collaboration with Sigtuna Foundation and Olov Hartman. The building impresses with its square shape, pyramid-shaped roof with black-painted corrugated metal, and a distinctive cross in the form of a stylized ship on the roof. A narrow strip of windows runs along the entire building, and four corner windows extend from floor to ceiling. The interior is characterized by stained glass windows in blue tones and beautiful wall paintings by Astrid Theselius featuring motifs of water and growing trees.

In 1986, the chapel was expanded with a parish hall according to architect Hilding Lögdberg's proposal. Next to the chapel stands an open bell tower from 1962, designed by Nils-Henrik Winblad. The interior contains several artworks, including an altar cross and a votive ship by Tore Bergh as well as a weaving by Birgitta Algesten.
