Rimbo

The hub of western Roslagen

Rimbo lies about 20 kilometres west of Norrtälje along national road 77 and serves as a natural meeting place in western Norrtälje municipality. The locality has medieval roots and is mentioned in historical documents as early as 1303. Rimbo grew out of an old assize site and marketplace at the crossroads – a role that persisted when the Stockholm–Roslagen Railways line opened in 1884 and the community took shape around the station of that time.

Rimbo church, also known as Saint Andrew's church, is one of the locality's most prominent buildings. The stone church was erected in the late 1400s and is consecrated to the apostle Andrew. The interior holds preserved lime paintings from around the year 1500, of which the depiction of the seven sacraments on the northern chancel wall is one of the finer examples. The church's communion chalice and paten from the 1300s are counted among the most valuable of their kind in Sweden. Rune-stone-shaped granite walls and rich brick blind arcading on the gable ends give the church a striking exterior.

Things to do in Rimbo

In addition to the church visit, Rimbo can offer the lively Rimbo market – one of Sweden's largest one-day markets – which is held every year on the first Thursday in October and attracts visitors from across the region. The hilly farmland around Rimbo, with its wooded sections, is well suited for walks and cycling. The locality is also a good starting point for further excursions along national road 77 towards coastal communities and nature reserves in Norrtälje municipality.

How to get here

Rimbo is reached easily by car along national road 77, about an hour north of Stockholm. Regional buses in SL traffic serve the Stockholm–Rimbo–Norrtälje route regularly, which makes the locality easily accessible without a car. From Uppsala you can travel by UL bus via roads 288 and 77.
