Rindö

The island's mission was to close off the inlet

Rindö is approximately five kilometres long and just over one kilometre wide, and has always been important from a defence perspective. Fortifications have existed here since the days of Gustav Vasa, and the reason is geography: the island lies right in the inlet leading to Stockholm.

On the eastern side are Byviksfort and Oskar-Fredriksborg fortification, built to guard Oxdjupet. On the western side lies Rindö redoubt with the associated 12th battery, which complemented Vaxholm Castle in defending the inlet via Kodjupet and Norra Vaxholmsfjärden.

The regiment's island

Until autumn 2005, the First Amphibious Regiment was stationed on Rindö — previously known as Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment. During the first decades of the 20th century, Vaxholm Grenadier Regiment was also stationed here.

When the military left, the buildings became available for other purposes. This is why the island today has an art gallery in a redoubt and a boat warehouse in an old defence building.

• Rindö Måldepån — official bathing place in Vaxholm municipality, registered in the EU's bathing water register.

How to get here

County road 274 crosses the island, with car ferry to Vaxholm in the west (Vaxholmsleden) and to Värmdö in the east (Oxdjupsleden). A bus line crosses the island and connects the ferry terminals; some buses drive aboard the Vaxholmsleden ferry and continue into central Vaxholm.

A bridge connects to the neighbouring island of Skarpö.
