Roslagen's Flag Day
On 21 June, Roslagen's flag day is celebrated – a regional festivity that brings together the coastal municipalities of Norrtälje, Österåker and Östhammar around a shared symbol for the landscape and the sea.
A Flag for Roslagen
In 2020, Roslagen got its own flag. It was created on the initiative of Erik Rudolfsson from Östhammar, who let the colours of the sea and history shape a symbol for the entire region. The flag is a Nordic cross flag with a dark blue background and a yellow cross with white outlines.
The Symbolism Behind the Colours
The dark blue field refers to the darker blue shade of the old Swedish flag, before the Flag Act of 1906 standardized a lighter tone. The yellow cross alludes, among other things, to the historical postal rowing to Åland. The white outer edges of the cross symbolize the sea in motion – white sails, greylag geese in a storm and the ice that sometimes neither bears nor breaks.
June 21st – Roslagen Day
Flag Day is celebrated on June 21st, around midsummer and the brightest day of the year. In Norrtälje, Österåker and Östhammar, the flag is hoisted to celebrate the day. In many places in Roslagen, Roslagsbakelsen is also served – a pastry with the taste of raspberry and chocolate, created by Roslagsbageriet in Norrtälje to give Flag Day its own flavour.
