Roslagsleden - Stage 5

Stage Overview

Stage 5 is one of the longer stages of the Roslagsleden trail at 20 km. From Domarudden the trail leads northward through forest rich in lakes toward the historic ironworks Wira bruk. The terrain is forested and gently rolling with forest trails and forest roads. Estimated time is 5 hours and the difficulty level is moderate (blue).

Along the Trail

The stretch begins in the lake-rich forest environment around Trehörningsskogen nature reserve. Beavers are commonly found along waterways, and their dams can sometimes create small water flows along the trail. About five kilometers in you reach Oppsjön with a wind shelter and barbecue area. The lake Holmsjön offers swimming opportunities from rocks. A couple of kilometers before the destination lies the lake Viren, with a wind shelter and fireplace. The culmination of the stage is Wira bruk, a well-preserved cultural landscape connected to iron and weapons manufacturing since the 1600s. Here you can find preserved smithies and works environments that bear witness to a time when the works supplied swords and bayonets to the Swedish great power. East of the trail are Roslags-Kulla Church and Östanå Castle, both worth a detour.

Practical Information

The starting point at Domarudden has parking (max 24 hours weekdays). The end point Wira bruk is reached by bus to Åkersberga, Norrtälje and Ljusterö. Toilets and drinking water are available at start and finish. Difficulty level: moderate (blue marking).
