Roslagsleden - Stage 7

Stage Overview

Stage 7 is 15.9 km long and takes the hiker north from Penningby Castle park towards Vigelsjö and the immediate vicinity of Norrtälje. The terrain is mixed with gravel roads, forest trails and shorter asphalt sections. The stage is classified as moderate (blue) and is estimated to take 4 hours.

Along the Trail

Just north of Penningby, the village roads towards Lännaby offer the opportunity to make a detour to Länna Church, built in the 14th century with Gothic wall paintings that rank among the county's oldest surviving murals. Further on, the trail passes the steep, forest-clad shores of Lake Kyrksjön — a dramatic feature in otherwise open countryside. On the other side of the lake rises Borgberget with an Iron Age hillfort. Near Frötuna Church, one of the trail's oldest churches with roots from the 12th century, there is a rest area by the beautiful Lake Kyrksjön. The trail leads into Norrtälje city, one of Roslagen's historic central locations, and out again towards Vigelsjö. The stage ends at Lommarbadet with sandy beach, parking and facilities by Lake Lommaren.

Practical Information

The starting point at Penningby Castle is reached by bus from Åkersberga station (Roslagsbanan + bus 620). Note: a section of approximately 3.5 km along road 276 is recommended to be covered by bus. Parking and toilets are available at Penningby Castle and Lommarbadet. Difficulty level: moderate (blue marking).
