Siaröfortet on Kyrkogårdsön

From the start of Siaröfortet's construction in 1916 until the 1950s, Kyrkogårdsön between Ljusterö and the mainland was a secret place with a landing ban for everyone except the military. But the new defence installation was rejected because of overly damp sleeping quarters inside the mountain. So overnight stays for conscripts inside the fort were forbidden in peacetime. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, the fort was considered outdated. The installation was nevertheless used for military exercises until the 1960s, when it was abandoned and began to fall into disrepair. But in the 1990s Siaröfortet was refurbished into a museum and opened to visitors. The museum offers a unique and exciting insight into the coastal defence of those days, with cannons and rifle trenches above ground and everything from a battle command centre to a kitchen and barracks blasted into the mountain underground. Siaröfortet is just as exciting for grown-ups as for children. Both guided tours and your own discoveries with an audio guide are offered here. The old barracks building above ground is now a hostel and restaurant with conference facilities. There is also a guest harbour, sea sauna, rocks and a sandy beach here. Siaröfortet is 1 hour and 45 minutes from Stockholm, 35 minutes from Åkersberga and about an hour from Norrtälje. Transport: SL: metro to Danderyds sjukhus + bus 621 to Östanå + boat or water taxi.
