Singö and Fogdö

Singö lies in the northernmost part of Stockholm County, near the border with Uppsala County. The bus stop at Ellan is Greater Stockholm's public transport's northernmost. The island is about 66 km in circumference and has about 300 permanent residents and 3,000-4,000 holiday residents. On southern Singö by the bridge there is a campsite, cottages, boat hire and a kiosk. There is also a country shop on the island. Singö skärgårdsslöjd creates and sells handicrafts in all possible forms and techniques. Fogdö lax by Singö Sund farms rainbow trout and delivers a range of different products. The salmon farm is visited by customers, sea eagles and seals alike. The association Levande roslagsbygd has marked out hiking trails and paths on Singö and Fogdö. The marked trails make it possible to visit beautiful parts of the islands. A tip is to take the bus to one of the stops along the trail and walk back. Many stops are located close to the trail, from Ellan in the north to southern Fogdö. Singö is first mentioned in a mortgage deed in 1334. The villages of Söderby, Tranvik, Backby, Norrvreta, Boda and Ellan have been known since the Middle Ages. Do look at the boathouses in Backbyn and Singö wooden church, which was built in 1753. It is one of the few preserved older archipelago churches. The altar cabinet from the 1490s was made in Lübeck. There was a church on the same site already in the 1600s. Backbyn and Tranvik are cultural environments of national interest – coastal and archipelago environments that reflect the multifaceted economy of fishing and seafaring, animal husbandry and farming. The bathing spot at Backbyn has a sandy beach with grassy areas in a sheltered, south-facing bay. East of the bathing spot there is a fishing hamlet. In the 1740s the whole of Backby was bought by a man from Östhammar who established a lime and brick works. In the mid-1800s a marble works was also established at Enholmen. Many of the gravestones in Singö churchyard are made of the green Singö marble. The bridge to Singö was inaugurated in 1955. Before that, daily services ran with Waxholmsbolaget's boats from Strandvägen in Stockholm via Norrtälje, Väddö Canal, Trästa, Singö with the final destination Östhammar or Öregrund. Today you get to Singö from Stockholm and Norrtälje by SL bus 637, by car or your own boat.
