Experience the archipelago all year round
Roslagen's archipelago is not just a summer scene. Each season has its own character – from the glittering sun of midsummer to the ice-covered sea bays of winter and the silhouettes of sea eagles against grey skies.
Summer – boats, swimming and Baltic herring
Summer is peak season in the archipelago. Harbours fill with boats, rocks are warmed by the sun and Baltic herring is grilled at jetties and fishing villages. The islands are accessible by regular archipelago boat and many smaller skerries can be reached by kayak or your own boat. Meadows bloom with cowslips and orchids and birdlife is at its richest.
Autumn – tranquility and mushrooms
When the summer guests leave the islands the pace slows down and the archipelago regains its everyday silence. Autumn colours shine brightly against the silvery-grey water. Mushroom and berry picking in forests and on islands rewards those who search. Sea trout fishing picks up when the water temperature drops below ten degrees.
Winter – ice, sea eagles and ice fishing
During winters when the ice sets in, a trip on skates out towards the outer archipelago is an unbeatable experience. The sea eagle – a species that has made a strong comeback in Sweden – is often seen circling over open water and ice in Roslagen's archipelago. Ice fishing and guided winter excursions are offered in several places.
Spring – bird migration and awakening nature
Early in spring thousands of birds travel along Roslagen's coast during the great migration northwards. The islands awaken to life with early flowers and nesting seabirds along the shorelines. It is the season for those who appreciate peace, birdwatching and having the best places to themselves.
