Island Weekend for Two — Öregrund and Gräsö
A long weekend in the northern archipelago, with Öregrund's wooden town and neighbouring Gräsö as your base. Three days of seaside swimming, local food crafts and space for stillness — for those seeking archipelago peace rather than a packed schedule.
Day 1 — Öregrund
Öregrund is one of the best-preserved wooden house towns along the Uppland coast, with white houses, paved cobblestones and a harbour facing the sea. Stroll along the quay, explore the narrow alleyways and take your time.
Öregrund is reached by car via road 76 (approximately 1.5 hours from Uppsala) or by bus 811 from Uppsala. Have dinner at Strandnära Bistro & Bar located near the water.
Day 2 — Gräsö
On the second day, take the free car ferry across to Gräsö — the crossing takes only five minutes. Gräsö is a vibrant year-round island with open countryside, sandy beaches and marked hiking trails. Rent a bicycle and explore the island at a leisurely pace, or paddle in the sheltered bays with Gräsö Kanotcentral.
For those who want to get out on the water without their own power, Gräsörävarna offers guided boat tours in the Öregrund archipelago. End the day with an evening swim from the rocks.
Day 3 — Söderarm or a leisurely journey home
Those with time and favourable weather can take a day trip to Söderarm, a nature reserve with one of the archipelago's most dramatic lighthouse settings out towards the open sea. White-tailed eagles nest here and the place exudes true seclusion.
If you prefer a calmer conclusion, a final morning in Öregrund is perfect: a coffee break, one last swim and a walk before heading home.
Best time to visit
The archipelago weekend works best from late spring to early autumn, when ferries and seasonal services are in operation. The summer months of June–August offer the fullest range of activities, while May and September often provide a calm atmosphere and fewer crowds.
