Skebobruk

Uppland's Oldest Industrial History

As early as 1444, there is reliable evidence of iron production at Skebobruk – the oldest known example of a medieval industrial works in Uppland. The modern works were established in 1622 by Heinrich Lemmens, and during the 1680s, Walloon smiths introduced their techniques to the site. The works manufactured bar iron using raw materials from the Dannemora mine and at its peak employed several hundred people, making it one of Roslagen's largest workplaces. In 1924, the works went bankrupt and closed.

The Works Environment

The works manor house was built in the 1770s by Jacob Grill and remains an impressive sight surrounded by the well-preserved works street with hundred-year-old trees. The old fire station houses the Skebobruk museum, which is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 1–4 PM during the summer. In the old foundry there is a pub where musical events are arranged.
