Cross-country skiing along the coast and inland

When the cold sets in and the snow falls, Roslagen opens up a network of cross-country ski trails spread throughout the region. The trails vary in character: some are maintained by the municipalities, others by local sports associations and volunteers, and a couple of facilities offer more organized conditions with grooming guarantees.

Gimo Ski Center in Östhammar

Gimo Ski Center, located in Gimo in Östhammar Municipality, is the region's most complete winter facility. The center has both downhill slopes with lifts and cross-country ski trails, and is equipped with a snow-making system that makes it possible to keep the trails open even during winters with little natural snow. It is the facility in Roslagen that offers the most reliable conditions regardless of the weather.

Norrtälje Municipality's trails

In Norrtälje Municipality, the municipality is responsible for grooming the Vigelsjö–Färsna–Knutby trail during the winter season. In addition to the municipal trail, there are cross-country ski trails at several locations in the municipality, including Hallstavik, Rimbo and Edsbro, often maintained by local associations. In Häverödal, there is Lundåsvallen's snow-making trail, which provides conditions for skiing even when natural snow is lacking.

Season and conditions

The cross-country skiing season in Roslagen normally runs from December to March, but varies greatly from year to year depending on snow availability. The coastal location means that snow can come late and melt early compared to inland locations further north. The snow-making trails at Gimo Ski Center and Lundåsvallen provide the best guarantees for skiing throughout the season. Roslagen's ski trails are mainly adapted for recreational cross-country skiing. The terrain in the region is rolling but rarely extreme, which makes the trails accessible for most levels — from beginners to experienced skiers looking for a good recreational outing in nature.
