Slätön-Medholma nature reserve

Nature Reserve. Large parts of the islands have during this time been used for e.g.

Slätön and Medholma have had permanent inhabitants, at least from the early Middle Ages until the end of the 1930s. Large parts of the islands were during this period used for, for example, grazing, hay-making, cultivation and selective logging. The valleys were open and used for cultivation and hay-making. The parts that were not used for hay-making and cultivation were strongly characterized by grazing. Traces from this period are common in the form of old, gnarled trees and shrubs, mainly oak, ash and pine and spruce and hazel. In some places there are old infields and pastures that are still strongly characterized by the previous management. The natural values are linked to tree-bearing cultural landscapes with old large trees, natural coniferous and mixed forests with old conifers and leaf-rich hollows, shorelines, rocky ground, open wetlands and natural swamp forests. For a detailed description of the individual islands, see attached document. Since we were already aware that Yxeln has high natural values, this island was not included in the assignment.
