Söderöra

Söderöra is one of the islands chosen by Astrid Lindgren to film the TV series and films about life on Saltkråkan. Even today you can easily recognise the settings on both Söderöra and Norröra. On Söderöra many of the winter scenes were filmed. Two of the actors had their workplace close by during the filming. Both Torsten Lilliecrona (Melker) and Eva Stiberg (Märta, Tjorven's mother) had their summer houses on Söderöra. Söderöra got its first permanent population as early as the 1500s. Here people made a living from farming, fishing and hunting. The island had skilled boatbuilders. Erik Söderman was a well-known boatbuilder who built large boats. In 1948 the Nordic Museum documented boatbuilding on the island. Einar Sjöblom was then the island's only professionally active boatbuilder - he is said to have built over 400 craft. All Söderöra residents were said to be able to build at least small boats at that time. Söderöra had an elementary school, shared with the neighbouring island of Norröra right up to the 1960s, when the last farm was also closed down. The archipelago man Gösta Söderman lived on the island his whole life. The film "Gösta – Skärkarlen" is about his life in the outer archipelago. Söderöra is served daily by Waxholmsbolaget, but the boats do not run as often throughout the year. Raise the semaphore on the jetty if you want to come aboard!
