Autumn in Roslagen – a season for the senses and tranquility

When the summer visitors have left and the archipelago settles down, autumn is Roslagen's best-kept secret. The forests fill with chanterelles, porcini mushrooms and trumpet chanterelles – bring a basket and venture out along the Roslagsleden trail or the quiet paths around Norrtälje and Rimbo. Lingonberries and blueberries ripen in the rocky forests along the coast, their flavour concentrated by the summer heat.

On the sea, October is the big month for sea trout fishermen. The trout make their way towards the shores, making cliff fishing along the Roslagen coast one of the country's best experiences during the season. Archipelago boat trips in September and October offer an almost empty sea: the water mirrors the red-golden crowns of the maples and the white-tailed eagle circles above shallow bays. Birdwatching along the Björkskär and Husaröy coasts is a highlight for bird enthusiasts, with migrating birds of prey and resting ducks.

The autumn markets in Norrtälje and around the mills inland attract visitors with local produce, crafts and an atmosphere that reminds us that Roslagen has always had a foot in the agrarian community. Combine a market visit with lunch at one of the restaurants still open – many of them feature autumn menus with local game and mushrooms.
