Life on the Water

In Roslagen, summer is inseparable from archipelago life. Waxholmsbolaget's line 40 – the Nord/Sydlinjen – operates daily during the summer season from Norrtälje harbour through the entire archipelago. By boat you can reach islands and natural harbours that are otherwise difficult to access, and along the way Roslagen's outer archipelago opens up in all its expanse.

Midsummer in the Archipelago

Midsummer weekend is the year's great celebration in Roslagen. Midsummer poles are raised in farmyards and on jetties, the accordion strikes up and dancing around the pole is part of the tradition. Many choose to spend midsummer out on the islands – in a cottage, tent or aboard a boat – and midsummer weekend also marks the unofficial opening of archipelago restaurants and cafés along the coast.

Baltic Herring and Coastal Food Culture

Baltic herring is a deeply rooted part of Roslagen's coastal culture. In early summer, sport fishers gather in Hargshamn and at other coastal locations to jig for herring from boats. It is a social tradition as much as a fishing experience. Locally caught Baltic herring, prepared in the traditional way, is among the flavours of summer in the region.

Kayaking at Sunset

Paddling a kayak in Roslagen's archipelago during the bright summer evenings is an unparalleled experience. The long sunset light is reflected in the still water and the islands provide natural shelter from the wind. Boat rental and guided kayaking experiences are available at several locations along the coast.

Nature and Outdoor Life

Summer is peak season for hiking along Roslagsleden, bathing in natural harbours and visiting Ängsö National Park. With its rich flora and abundant birdlife, the national park is worth a visit even in the middle of summer – take the Gula båten's Ängsö line from Furusund.
