Stora Timrarö

The name Timrarö is said to derive from an inn that existed on the island during the 1600s and 1700s and that gave it the name "Zimmer insel", later corrupted to Timrarön. The southwestern part of the island was built up during the 1960s and 70s with about 30 summer cottages; otherwise the island was largely undeveloped and known for large areas of untouched archipelago nature. Now modern architect-designed houses have been built on the island. The bedrock consists largely of intensely red granite. In the forest on the high hills on the island's southern side, eagle owls used to nest. The eastern side of the bay on the southern part of the island has been a significant spawning ground for pike. At the southeastern end of the island there are Iron Age graves. On the southern side there is a small sandy beach and bathing spot. Waxholmsbolaget serves the Timrarö Östra jetty during spring, summer and autumn. Raise the semaphore at the jetty if you want to travel with the boat. The jetty has railings and a bench to sit on while you wait for the boat. There are also contrast markings at the jetty for those with reduced vision.
