Around Stordammen — nature walk in Österbybruk

Stordammen is Österbybruk's most important water reservoir — a dam created by royal commission in the early 1600s when Österbysjön and Dynsjön were connected to form a five-kilometer-long and one-kilometer-wide storage basin. The water powered the hammers and bellows that processed Dannemora ore into renowned iron. Today, the dam offers tranquil nature and one of the region's most beautiful bird-watching landscapes.

The trail around Stordammen is 14 km long and starts at the bathing area in Österbybruk. It runs through forest, across marshes and along shorelines on mostly easy-to-walk paths. Hundreds of meters of boardwalk keep feet dry and protect sensitive ground areas. Five kilometers of the loop coincide with Upplandsleden (marked in orange) between Österbybruk and Gimo. Rest areas with grilling facilities are available at Aspbo nature reserve and Knabohälla, which also have wind shelters and a jetty.
