Täby Church

Täby Church is a stone church from the latter part of the 13th century and serves as the parish church for Täby Parish. The church is located in Täby Church Village and is situated in an area with deep historical roots — the place name Täby is known from the runestones at Jarlabankes Bridge dating back to the 11th century.

Paintings of Masterful Quality

The church is known for its exceptionally well-preserved wall paintings from the 1480s, created by Albertus Pictor and his workshop. Unlike many other works from the workshop, the paintings in the vaults have never been whitewashed and thus preserve their original brilliance. Nearly half of the church's 66 images were inspired by the Biblia pauperum, and among the most famous paintings is Death Plays Chess — a motif that would later become known from Ingmar Bergman's classic film The Seventh Seal.

The church is filled with history in other ways as well: the altarpiece from the end of the 15th century bears German or Swedish-German design language, the pulpit from the 1630s is a gift from Charles XI and originally stood in the Tre Kronor Palace Chapel, and a new organ from 1994 has 25 stops. The church is protected under the provisions of the Cultural Heritage Act.
