Tjockö is located about 800 metres from Räfsnäs on the mainland and is one of the few islands in the archipelago that has retained much of its old character. In the past, the islanders lit fires on the rock to lure sailing ships ashore, then take care of the cargo, according to local tall tales. The artist Jenny Nyström was inspired by the setting, and many of her Santa paintings were created on Tjockö. On the island there is a year-round archipelago shop with groceries and other necessities, vegetables, Swedish meat from Andersson & Tillman and home-baked bread. You can order stone-oven-baked pizzas and sandwich cakes. The shop also has a small library and a coffee service with home-baked goods. The shop is an agent for LPG, pharmacy and Systembolaget. Loan carts are available for transporting heavy goods. For visitors with their own boat, there are two or three berths on Roholmen, next to the passenger boat's mooring spot. You can also anchor in a natural harbour on Tjockö's northern side. The main road runs from the steamboat jetty in the west to the eastern side of the island and is about four kilometres. There are paths through the forest and a walking route past the bathing beach to the lighthouse on the island's northwestern headland.
