Furusund is a classic archipelago harbour in Roslagen, known for its lively boat life, beautiful straits and strong connection to Swedish artists and writers.
A gem in Roslagen
Furusund is located where the shipping lane narrows into a picturesque sound in Norrtälje archipelago. The harbour has attracted visitors since the 1800s and is accessible by Waxholmsbåt from Stockholm as well as by bus via Norrtälje. The overland route to it is considered one of the most beautiful in the region.
Culture and history
In 1463, Union King Christian I moored with his naval fleet in Furusund and had a compass rose carved into the rock face – the oldest in the Nordic region and the only one with a royal star. Furusund has long attracted renowned cultural figures: August Strindberg stayed in the summer of 1899 in the villa Isola Bella with Harriet Bosse, and the place and its inhabitants are said to have inspired characters in his works. Evert Taube, Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Astrid Lindgren also found inspiration and rest here.
Harbour and activities
The guest harbour offers 100 berths with full service. From Furusunds Värdshus – housed in an old customs building from 1811 – you can watch the traffic in Furusundsleden, where cruise ships, Finland ferries and leisure boats pass. Activities in and around Furusund include:
