Vada Church

Vada Church is located in the church village of Vadaby in Vada parish in Uppland. The place name Vada is said to derive from the ford across the stream that once existed near the church. Since 2006, the church has belonged to Össeby parish in the Stockholm diocese.

A church with a long history

The church was built in the late 12th century or early 13th century and has undergone several changes over the centuries. The structure is built of stone and brick is found, among other places, in the gable wall. The building has been damaged by fire on more than one occasion and has been rebuilt and extended after each fire. The most recent major renovation took place in the early 1820s, when among other things the medieval vaults were replaced and the window openings were given their present rounded arch form.

Inside the church there are several valuable furnishings to behold. The pulpit dates from the early 17th century and a gravestone in the choir depicts the couple from Stora Benhamra in high relief and in full ceremonial dress. The organ has been expanded on several occasions and today has six stops. Northwest of the church, outside the churchyard wall, stands a freestanding bell tower from the 1640s, clad with black-tarred boards and crowned with a pyramidal roof covered with tarred shingles.
