Väddö prästgårds nature reserve

The reserve consists of a coniferous forest-dominated, partly lime-influenced natural forest with mosaic-like sections dominated by spruce and pine respectively. In parts of the area, the deciduous layer is extensive, primarily birch, but there are also aspens, alders, willows and hazels. Large parts of the forest are damp with patches of swamp forest with moving groundwater and high air humidity, which favours the cryptogam flora. Several ditches do, however, affect the area's hydrology. Tree continuity is likely very long in parts of the area, even though extensive forestry has occurred over a longer period. Forest grazing has occurred in large parts of the area until the early 1900s. In the eastern part of the reserve there are sections that were cultivated as recently as the 1940s and 1950s. These sections have now grown back and here there is a high proportion of deciduous trees. The forest environment is rich in structures in the form of coarse spruce, standing and fallen dead wood in various stages of decomposition, spring-influenced ground and damp stable swamp forest environment with trees standing on root plates. Species findings include, among others, the indicator species toothwort, coral-root bittercress and hepatica, which indicate lime-rich soil. The area has also found green shield moss, stump-spread moss and long-lobe moss, all of which require abundant supply of dead wood and continuity of decayed dead wood as well as high and even air humidity.
