Roslagen is a rewarding hiking landscape for families with children. The terrain is varied but often relatively flat near the coast, with clearly marked trails and plenty of natural rest spots at beaches and bathing coves.

Roslagsleden – Adapted for Everyone

Roslagsleden stretches 19 miles from Danderyd in the south to Grisslehamn in the north and is divided into eleven stages. The trail suits families who want to walk shorter sections – choose a stage that matches your children's age and endurance. The terrain along the trail is varied but generally accessible for older children and experienced hikers.

Tips for a Successful Family Outing

• Choose a short trail: 3–6 km is plenty for children under 8 years old. Prioritize trails with clear markings and a clear destination, such as a bathing spot or a viewpoint hilltop.
• Pack right: Extra clothes, nuts and fruit, plasters, insect repellent during the season. A small pair of binoculars makes bird watching more fun.
• Make nature into a game: Let the children find pinecones, track animals, count bird species. The coastal environment in Roslagen is rich in eider ducks, great crested grebes and white-tailed eagles.
• Combine swimming and hiking: Why not finish with a swim at one of the coastal beaches. It gives natural motivation to walk all the way.
• Best time: May–June (lush nature, fewer beach tourists) and September (mushrooms, autumn colors, cooler temperatures) are excellent months for family outings.

Accessibility

Certain parts of the coastal stretch near Norrtälje and along Roslagsleden have wide paths that can work for terrain wheelchairs or prams. Check the trail map with Norrtälje Municipality or Friluftsfrämjandet Norrtälje before you set off.
