Vätö Church

In the 1700s the vaults were whitewashed, but in 1904 the paintings were brought out again, and then a boy's head was also painted on the northern wall. The chancel's wood sculpture of St George and the dragon is a simpler copy of Notke's, which is in the Great Church (Storkyrkan) in Stockholm. The chapel by the southern wall is the private burial chapel of the sea captain, East India trader and lord of Lidö, Mathias Holmer. In the church there is a very remarkable baptismal font, which is probably from the mid-1100s and originates from Nydala monastery. A large part of the church's furnishings has over the years been sold to various museums in order to finance costly restorations. The bell tower was built no later than 1632 but may be considerably older. To Vätö church you can take bus 676 from Tekniska Högskolan to Norrtälje bus station. Change to bus 638 (Vätö) and get off at Utveda.
