Vaxholm - Vaxön

Thanks to its proximity to Stockholm and its central location in the archipelago, Vaxholm is perfect to visit whether you only have a day, a weekend or as a base for excursions to other archipelago islands. The town of Vaxholm is best experienced on foot. Vaxholm is a living archipelago town where fishermen's cottages and wholesalers' villas mingle with small shops, restaurants, cafés and galleries. There is beautiful archipelago nature and fine bathing beaches here. Everywhere the water is close by. Do join a town walk and experience Vaxholm's colourful history. In Vaxholm people have lived off herring fishing for many generations. At the end of the 1800s Vaxholm became a popular seaside resort for Stockholm's high society. It was also then that Vaxholm became known for its Vaxholm herring – a delicacy that is still served in Vaxholm's restaurants. In the 1500s King Gustav Vasa decided to place the defence of Stockholm's approach here. That was the beginning of almost 500 years of military history. Vaxholm Castle still towers in the sound outside the town. A visit to Vaxholm's fortress museum throws you back to the time when the Castle was like a little community of its own, populated by high-ranking military officers, soldiers, officers' wives, maids and prisoners. You get to Vaxholm easily with Waxholmsbolaget, the Cinderella boats, bus, car or your own boat – the guest harbour is in Västerhamnen, centrally located in Vaxholm with walking distance to most things. There is boat traffic to and from Vaxholm all year round, but not all ferries run year-round, so check the timetable. Vaxholm harbour is not accessibility-adapted, but there are benches to sit on.
