Vaxholm Fortress

A fortress with centuries of history

Vaxholm Fortress is located on an island in the Stockholm archipelago between the islands of Vaxön and Rindö. As early as the 1500s, the strategic importance of the location for defending the entrance to Stockholm was recognized. In 1548, the first fortification was built on the initiative of King Gustav Vasa, who himself selected the site. During the following centuries, the facility was gradually developed and expanded, and from the 1700s it also served as a prison.

The fortress gained its current appearance through a complete reconstruction that began in 1833 and was completed in 1863. The new facility was designed according to a modern defense system with an impressive five-story central tower, surrounded by casemates and other defensive structures designed to withstand artillery fire. The facility was very extensive – the garrison numbered around 1,200 men.

Since 1935, Vaxholm Fortress has been a state monument. On the island, there is today Vaxholm Fortress Museum, established in 2003, where visitors can explore several centuries of military and coastal history.
