Vikingaleden - Stage 6

Stage Description

Stage 6 runs from Harg to Gimo, a total of 14.2 km along gravel rural roads through beautiful cultivated countryside. The trail passes stone cairns, fields and remains from the 18th and 19th centuries. Parts of the route follow an old railway line that previously transported iron ore to Hargshamn harbour for further sea transport — and goods are still shipped to the harbour today. The stage is classified as easy with 36 metres of elevation gain and 70 metres of descent. Estimated walking time is approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes.

The stage starts south of Harg church, where parking is available. Be aware that the trail partly runs close to the main road; this section is marked in the ditch with traffic behind you. The next service point is Gimostadens petrol station. A pilgrim stamp is available in a bird box at the church in Harg.

Pilgrimage Tradition and History

Vikingaleden is part of St Olav Waterway, the pilgrimage route from Turku in Finland to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim — a total of approximately 1,200 kilometres and recognised as a cultural route by the Council of Europe. Stage 6 marks the transition from the Roslagen landscape towards Gimo, where Vikingaleden from stage 7 onwards converges with Upplandsleden and follows its course northwards through the Uppland industrial heritage landscape.

The history of the railway and harbour along this route is a reminder that Uppland was a centre of iron production for centuries — an industry that shaped both the landscape and communities in the region.
