Vikingaleden - Stage 8

Stage Description

Stage 8 stretches from Österbybruk to Risön, a total of 18.8 km. The stage leaves the industrial heritage area and leads you into vast forests and mire landscapes of the wilderness, with occasionally stony trails. The terrain is classified as moderately difficult with 78 meters of ascent and 66 meters of descent. Estimated walking time is approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes.

The trail passes through Florarna — Uppsala's largest nature reserve — with extensive wetlands, old-growth forest sections and small lakes. The reserve is home to lynx, owls, black grouse and occasionally white-tailed eagles. The stage destination Risön is a picturesque small farm from the 1700s with overnight accommodation in tents or wind shelters. Fill up on water in Österbybruk before departure, and bring insect repellent during the summer season.

Pilgrimage Tradition and History

Vikingaleden is the Swedish part of St Olav Waterway, the pilgrimage route from Åbo in Finland to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim — totalling approximately 1,200 kilometres and recognised as a cultural route by the Council of Europe. Österbybruk is one of the well-preserved Uppland industrial heritage sites with Walloon iron-working tradition from the 1600s. Stage 8 leads the walker from this cultural heritage into more pristine nature — a transition that reflects the character of the pilgrimage journey: moving away from the familiar towards something new.

Florarna nature reserve is one of Uppland's most untouched natural landscapes and gives the stage a strong sense of seclusion and contemplation.

Practical Information

The trail is marked with the red-marked routes of Upplandslden and Vikingaleden as well as the St Olav Cross. Fill up on water in Österbybruk. Bring insect repellent and insect protection during summer. Overnight accommodation in tents or wind shelters at Risön. Stay on marked trails to protect the reserve's nature.
