Winter in Roslagen
Here you'll find tips on everything from skiing and ice skating to winter bathing and barbecue areas.
Ice Skating on Natural Ice
When the cold persists, Roslagen's lakes and bays become a paradise for ice skaters. Lake Lommaren is maintained during winter and offers a plowed track all the way to Sundsta – roughly a mile there and back. Garnsviken in Åkersberga is also a popular area for long-distance skating tours when conditions permit. Always check the local ice conditions before setting out.
Ice Fishing
Ice fishing is one of Roslagen's most cherished winter traditions. With a fishing rod and a little patience, you can sit out on the ice and catch perch and pike while stillness spreads around you. Several lakes in the area are accessible to the public and require no special permits for hand-line fishing.
Winter Bathing and Sauna
Winter bathing is growing stronger in Roslagen. At Badholmen you can book a cold bath with a jetty and ladder, then warm up in the adjacent sauna. Domaruddens wood-fired sauna by Lake Drängsjön is open to the public year-round, and the lake invites a dip even during the coldest months.
Christmas Markets and Winter Atmosphere
In December, Norrtälje town centre transforms into an atmospheric Christmas market with crafts, delicacies and mulled wine. Grisslehamn also arranges a traditional Christmas market with pony rides and shopping. Furusund is another popular destination for a winter day trip with cosy café culture and beautiful coastal scenery.
Quiet Islands and Winter Stillness
Roslagen's archipelago is almost completely deserted in winter. Most summer guests are gone and the islands rest in a peace that summer never offers. Take the archipelago boat out and experience an island in winter dress – or take a stroll along shorelines that you normally share with hundreds of bathers.
Cosy Barbecue Areas
Along Roslagsleden and in nature reserves throughout the region, there are well-maintained barbecue areas perfect for a winter picnic. Light a fire, warm yourself and enjoy the silence of the winter forest.
