Wira ironworks museum

At the Wira Museum, a selection of the weapons and more peaceful ironworks objects made in the smithy is on display. There are also pictures and documents that tell more about what life and work in Wira have looked like through the ages.

Wira Bruk was founded in the 1630s as the country's first blade smithy. The works at times had the sole right to make swords for the crown. For the last 175 years, after the privileges ceased, scythes, axes and other utility articles were forged. The works was alive until 1948, when the last Wira smith passed away. In the mid-1960s the works was restored, and in 1970 the art smith Curt Wägerth moved his business here. The museum and the charming coffee cottage also opened then. The museum is housed in the so-called alderman's cottage from the 1700s, which formerly served as a dwelling for the blade smiths who had become too old to work in the smithy.
