Yxlan — Island Guide
Yxlan is one of the larger archipelago islands in northern Stockholm's archipelago, located between Furusund on the mainland and the island of Blidö. With a free car ferry, varied nature featuring cliffs, pine forests and sheltered bays, and a lively summer community, Yxlan is one of Roslagen's more accessible gems.
An Island in the Heart of the Blidö Route
Yxlan stretches across approximately 17 square kilometers and is one of the larger islands in Stockholm's northern archipelago. The island is part of Norrtälje Municipality and Blidö parish. Its natural location — between the mainland side of Furusund and the popular holiday island Blidö — makes Yxlan a central link in the Blidö Route, the ferry route that connects the archipelago's islands.
Nature and Landscape
Yxlan is mostly covered with forest consisting of spruce and pine. The landscape varies between rocky coasts, woodland, meadows and sheltered bays. From the open rocky hills in the north, wide views towards the Åland Sea are offered. The island's undisturbed character and lack of industrialization have preserved much of its archipelago nature.
Getting to Yxlan
Yxlan is reached by free car ferry from Furusund on the mainland — a 530 meter crossing that takes four minutes. From there, a further free ferry continues on to Blidö. Bus 632 from Norrtälje runs to Furusund. Traveling from Norrtälje–Furusund–Yxlan–Blidö by public transport and free ferry is a popular summer day trip option.
Summer Life
During the summer months, Yxlan comes alive with activities. Each year in August, Konstrundan on Yxlan is arranged, when about fifteen artists open their homes and studios to visitors. Outdoor flea markets and local events draw visitors from across the region.
